Gold Cup Day

17. March 2011

It’s finally here. Way back in the Autumn I blogged about a changing of the guard. I expected the three previous winners of the Gold Cup to fall away in the market, replaced by the thrusting young pretenders that I was certain would emerge. To be blunt it hasn’t happened. I stand by the sentiment [...]

Pressure’s off after Sizing’s display and I’m looking forward to really enjoying the next couple of days. As ever, I’ll have a tilt at a few at big prices and hope we get lucky with one.

Sizing a Sizzler!

Every now and again in this mad and marvellous game everything comes together. I love Sizing Europe and to be standing at the last today to cheer him home having backed him, tipped him, touted and defended him was a wonderful buzz.
Andrew Lynch let this powerful galloper fiddle a few fences in behind a surprisingly [...]

Cheltenham Day Two

Onwards and upwards! Al Ferof got me out of jail on day one but the undoubted highlight was the performance of the horse I’ve described as a ‘heart over head’ choice; Hurricane Fly. I’d hoped he’d be able to do his thing at Cheltenham without ever feeling inclined to bet on it happening. That didn’t [...]

Cheltenham Day One Review

What a race!
We’d hoped the Champion Hurdle would produce the goods and my God it did. I hadn’t backed Hurricane myself as I never felt there was too much juice in his price but as a big fan of the horse I was hoping he would produce something special and he certainly did.
Peddlers Cross is [...]

Just interviewed Paul Nicholls for Betfair down at the Festival. Ghizao his best chance of the day although he did express a small concern about the ground being ‘just about quick enoubh’ for Ghizao. On the subject of the ground Nicholls was adamant that ’soft horses won’t be winning here this week, no chance’.
The official [...]

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby?

15. March 2011

Here’s a question. If you owned a potential champion hurdler or chaser running at the Festival would you put Ruby Walsh up on it this week? He could manage only one ride at Navan two days ago, where I thought he looked way below 100%, and is expected to ride four top horses in four [...]

Cheltenham Day One

Well, it’s finally upon us. I’ll start my day tomorrow with a quick walk around the course and I’ll try and blog about anything of note that I observe. Here for what it’s worth are my advance thoughts on the first day of hostilities.

Henderson Hyperbole

14. March 2011

I’m back. Roused from my slumbers by the ridiculous over reaction in some quarters to news of Binocular’s non participation in the Champion Hurdle. Truth is I can’t keep my mouth shut once the Festival comes around anyway but this is too good a topic not to pass comment on.
