More to Come from Montaff

Best Bets

Eagle eyed ATR viewers may have spotted my brief cameo at the track back on the 9th October. I was there to meet up with a couple of our ATR Poker Club tournament winners but of course was also taking in the sport and having a bet or two. Robert Cooper enquired as to my ‘nap of the day’ . ‘Montaff at 50/1′ was my reply.

Montaff is a horse who seemed to have lost his way. He ran in Sea The Stars Derby having chased home Age of Aquarius in the Derby trial. He’s only managed one win in his career overall but Mick Channon confirmed to me at Ascot that the horse has had a ‘lot of problems’.

I decided to give him one more roll of the dice at Ascot because there was plenty of juice in the ground and I liked the booking of Johnny Murtagh.

Well, Montaff managed only sixth place but he ran a very good race I thought, making plenty of progress late on. It looked to me that they had got something of the old Montaff back and when I saw Mick Channon smiling all over his face after the race that impression seemed to be confirmed.

After the race I thought that the November Handicap at Doncaster on soft ground would be tailor made for the resurgent Montaff and it looks like that’s exactly where he’s headed. Johnny Murtagh is already booked for the ride which I would imagine was something agreed on even as he was dismounting at Ascot on the back of such a pleasing run. Johnny is now in the States of course for the Breeders Cup so a replacement will need to be found. Be interesting wouldn’t it if Richard Hughes ended up getting on?

The weather forecast for South Yorkshire is wonderfully wet and gloomy and it looks almost certain he’ll have his favoured soft ground.

He won’t be 50/1 this time around but he is freely available at 20/1 and that’s good enough for me and I’ll be going nap on him once again this weekend.

You tip it up at 20s, then Tom Segal tips it up at 25s, and that 25s is still available. This isn’t looking good Boycie.

I’d ignore the handicaps and stick to the classiest race on this card. Zahoo looks set to give the main man a memorable ending to a fine season.

Started calling a copper there when it looed like double trouble for Hills layers. Got done for wasting police time.
